When I am a mom can I wear high heels?

Motherhood Conversations
Ashley and I seem to have lots of little motherhood conversations.
Ashley: mom, is it hard being a mom?
Mom: why do you ask?
Ashley: like one kid wants you and then another one and another one and some yell. and if they are whining because they are so hungry.
Mom: sometimes it is really hard, but it is totally worth it.
Ashley: mom, tomorrow is your lucky day!
Mom: why is that?
Ashley: because you don't have to make us breakfast!
(it was the night before the primary activity where they were serving breakfast!)
Ashley: mom, tomorrow is your lucky day again (the next week)
Mom:why?
Ashley: you get to sleep in!
I find it so amazing that she recognizes what a mom does. And I love that she shares her thoughts with me.
Ashley: I want to have 4 kids just like you. But maybe I would like to have 2 girls and 2 boys.
Mom: That would be perfect for you.
Ashley: If I had 4 kids just like you I would name them Caspian, Max, Sara, and Mick.
She is already such a good little mommy. She plays so kindly with Coleman. She is good at showing affection. She is also so concerned with other people's feelings. for example:
(after hearing Mitchel say he did not like the oatmeal chocolate chip bars I made)
Ashley: Mom, does that hurt your feelings?
Mom: no. everybody likes different things.
Ashley: But you made them. I love them mom.
I know there are more, but my memory fails me.
I'm pretty sure she is the sweetest 6 year old around!

look who's got earrings.
The date was Saturday, January 17 just after lunch. We were shopping for new jeans at the mall. As we entered the mall doors Ashley asked if today was the day she could get her ears pierced.
She had been asking for a few months. And even though I had no objection to it, I just hadn't gotten around to taking her. And a part of me thought she could never actually do it. She doesn't exactly appear to have a high pain tolerance and I was wanting her to know that although it was brief, it did hurt. I had visions of us getting one earring in, her freaking out and not allowing the other to be pierced.
But we were already at the mall, so I said sure. I am still thinking she will chicken out when we get there. She watched as another girl got her ears pierced and Ashley was more excited than ever. She picked out her earrings, climbed up in the chair, and never even flinched. I was amazed.
And now we have lovely pink little flowers adorning her ears. She is thrilled beyond words.

Back to life. Back to reality.
As I sit here thinking about school and work resuming tomorrow, I thought of that song. I can't think of any words to it other than those 2 phrases. And I just keep singing them over and over with a little do-do-do in between!
Back on December 19, I thought I just might be going crazy by now. I figured I would even be ready to go back to work and send the kiddos off to school. But, I am not.
It was a good break. It was full of good times, minimal arguing, and 17 days of sleeping in. Ahhh it was wonderful!
There were a lot of things I did not get done. I always have a head full of good intentions. Intentions that never seem to come to pass. I hate that about myself. Seriously, I can't figure out why I don't get all of my intentions accomplished - or at least a good chunk of them. And sometimes I just kick myself for not doing things sooner. For example, Justin wanted more than anything to for me to watch both Narnia movies with him over the break. How hard is it to sit under a blanket with you kids by the warm fire and watch movies? Well apparently for me it is quite the task. I finally just got the 2nd one watched today! And it is enjoyable. They are great movies (my first time seeing them) and I love relaxing and being with my kids. I am just trying to figure out why I didn't do this sooner. For one, if you could have seen his face and heard him thank me a million times like I had done something really extraordinary I should have leapt at the chance the very first day! Not to mention I wouldn't have disappointed him all the days we didn't get it done. And then there is Mitchel who wanted more than anything to just play one game of Life. That too was not done until tonight. Thanks to Josh. I don't mean to make their "desires" seem unimportant and I definitely don't want them to think I don't have time for them, it just seems so hard to get everything done all the time and keep everyone happy. I never thought this would be so tough, but I seem to be struggling lately!
But hey, even if I got them in at the last moment, at least they got done. The boys went to bed happy tonight and didn't even have to ask when I was going to get to those things. That is more than I can say for a lot of other things I had in mind for the holidays! I guess there is always next year.
But as the night ends, my memories of the holidays and all the time we got to spend together are happy ones. In fact, it was purely wonderful. Reality is going to hit me in the morning. I may just have to pull those covers over my head......

Mom's Birthday
Yesterday was my mom's birthday. Josh made his famous ( in our opinion) potato soup and she and my dad came over for dinner. I made brownies and my Dad brought some ice cream. It was just a simple dinner, but being together was the best part. Sappy sounding but true.
I have been blessed with such a good mom. I could fill pages with my fond memories, her amazing characteristics, and kind deeds. I love that she and I have such a good relationship and I cannot think of a time when we did not. I never went through a phase were I did not "like" my mom. I love that she is kind, willing to give to others, is a good listener, and shows she knows and cares about you. I have such a good example right before my eyes of how to be a good mom. Sometimes when I find myself being short tempered or frustrated with my kids I think of her - I don't think she ever got frustrated! She was always just helping us and listening to us and making us always feel like we were important and what we had to say was brilliant and important also. I learned a lot from her and really, I guess I am still learning. I may have a long ways to go, but I do know what I am aiming for!

The best part is she is just as good a grandma. My kids squeal with delight every time they see her. We live here now, but the excitement of seeing her and spending time with her has not worn off and I don't think it ever will. They literally squeal and hug her like its been ages since they've seen her last. I love it and I think she does too. I don't blame them- sometimes I feel like squealing myself!

Christmas Morning
Christmas morning began with concern that Santa left no gifts.
There were no wrapped packages by their stockings, only unwrapped gifts. I explained to them that Santa never wrapped my gifts when I was little. And that only on one occasion had he wrapped theirs and that was just the year he was out to trick the boys! Whew! They were relieved that he had indeed dropped by and left gifts.
Apparently Mitchel snuck out of bed around 2 am to see if he had arrived yet. He woke up Ashley and they could not figure out if he had been there or not. She then slept with Mitchel in his bed until 7 the next morning when they woke up Josh and I. And come to find out, Justin had set up his camera to try and video Santa but it timed out. Bummer! What a clever idea.
When the kids came in our room, Coleman was also sleeping in our bed. The kids asked him if he was ready to see if Santa brought him anything. He quickly sat up and said "yes. I feel better. I got better when I heard Santa's bell ring." Not sure where he came up with that one, but he continued to tell everyone all day that he felt better when he heard Santa's bell.
They enjoyed their gifts from Santa and then unwrapped the gifts from Josh and I. Around 9 or so we loaded up and headed to my parents. The cousins were anxiously awaiting our arrival so we could open all the other gifts- gifts from each other (miller cousins to graham cousins) and the gifts from grandma and grandaddy.
We had breakfast and then sat down for a fun time of unwrapping more gifts and seeing the excitement all around. And then it was off to play with all the fun new toys - their own and their cousins!
We spent the remainder of the day there. We had a lovely ham dinner and just soaked up being together. Playing lots of games, eating, and talking. And watching the snow fall all day. We did indeed have a White Christmas.

Christmas Books

I love Christmas Books. We keep a basket full of Christmas books upstairs and we try to read one or two each night in December. I think we missed a lot of nights this year for some reason. And some nights it was just the 2 little ones and me. The boys seem to have "outgrown" some of the books. I admit, many are geared more towards Coleman. So I need to hit the after Christmas sales and stock up on some new ones - perhaps ones with more true Christmas meaning. I would love some suggestions. What are your favorites??
